Movies: Special Effects in Space I

The first movie my fellow movie makers and I wanted to create featured a big an epic feature length story with vast battle scenes (like we had seen before in Star Wars). As this was in the early 80's and we were about 12 or 13 years old during that time, we had to improvise a little bit.

We used the model kits, drinking straws for laser shots, pieces of cotton wool for explosions and moved our vessels frame by frame using stop motion (yes, this was years before CGI). Unfortunately the moving vessels left tracks on our starfield, which was created by black cardboard (good idea) sprinkled with powder (which created beautiful halos around the star's center, but if you move a space ship over it... well, bad idea;-)

But in the end, we learned from our mistakes and tried different approaches.
